The company

The business consists of the development and maintenance of stone crushers used in the mining and construction industry. Located in Svedala. Approximately 500 employees.

The mission

Noise reduction in Sandvik Mining & Construction's newly built welding hall. One requirement was that Products in the workflow could be moved in and out of the welding hall using a traverse.

The result

An efficient and safe welding hall with low noise levels. The noise level in the adjacent production hall has also been reduced thanks to the wall absorbing sound in both directions. The door allows the internal material handling to flow efficiently and the use of forklifts has been minimized.

World-class welding facility - Gigant silencer at Sandvik

In 2011, Sandvik Mining & Construction in Svedala carried out an initiative that is best described as unique. The project was considered one of the largest in Sweden that year. To meet their own stringent noise requirements, they partnered with Gigant.

One of the challenges was to create a pleasant sound environment at the welding shop, which is located next door to the other, much quieter, operations. This meant not only reducing the noise level inside the welding hall, but also ensuring that as little noise as possible leaked out.

- One of our requirements was that we should be able to pass the wall with a traverse to get a good flow in production, says Simon Norman, who was project manager for the welding hall.

Gigant carried out a needs analysis and measured the noise levels. The solution was a six meter high wall with an equally high gate. There is no lintel at the top, so the traverse can easily be moved in and out of the welding hall.

- Our goal was a top-class welding business. The best possible. I think we have succeeded. In fact, at Sandvik Mining & Construction, with 500 employees, we have not had an accident in eight months. This shows that we have come a long way," says Simon Norman.
